I choose to research carousels because in the book there is a significance having to do with carousels. 1 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carousel2 - http://www.masconomet.org/teachers/trevenen/catcher.html3 - http://www.cummingsstudyguides.net/Guides3/Catcher.html4 - http://www.shmoop.com/catcher-in-the-rye/symbolism-imagery.html5 - http://catcherintherye.com/

The carousel was made in Byzantine bas-relief, dating to around 500 A.D., which depicts riders in baskets suspended from a central pole. http://kaybee.mlblogs.com/carousel.jpg

"Then the carousel started, and I watched her go round and round...All the kids tried to grap for the gold ring, and so was old Phoebe, and I was sort of afraid she's fall off the goddamn horse, but I didn't say or do anything. The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it is bad to say anything to them." -Holden http://www.joeydevilla.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/catcher_in_the_rye_hardcover.jpg

Holden figured many things out when he was watching the carousel.

Questions: 1.) What is the significance of the carousel in Catcher in the Rye?2.) What did Holden compare the carousel to?3.) By the way Holden described it, could you personally relate to a carousel in some way?4.) What kind of resolve do you think Holden found in the carousel scene?5.) Have you ever had any experiences similar to this?
